With ambitious regeneration plans, the borough is set to become a highly attractive location for future investors and a place where residents and visitors can thrive. I am a proud of how far Doncaster has come as it establishes itself as a highly attractive location for future investors, a place where our young people can thrive and where residents and visitors can enjoy a wealth of culture, events and attractions.
I anticipate great things in as we take DGT forward and find new ways of working with partners, local communities, and our fantastic volunteers as we continue on an exciting journey with a confident, bold ambition for the borough. The scheme is designed to open up the town centre to more visitors and businesses, and improve the atmosphere for residents by creating a highly attractive public space. The makeover will also enable the market to host more events, encouraging more people to visit the area.
Sitting alongside Cast and Civic Office, it will add to the transformation of the Waterdale area.

He had an elder sister, Sally, three younger brothers, Peter, Timothy and David , and one younger sister, Georgina. As a youngster, Hunt became a proficient sportsman. He played for the Westerleigh School cricket team, and played in goal at football for two years. At the age of 12 he entered an under s tennis tournament, and lost to a year-old in the final. Rather than congratulate himself, he instead cried for hours.
He later competed at Junior Wimbledon, and also became a keen squash player and golfer. As a child, Hunt was fascinated with animals and birds, and professed an intention of becoming a doctor, which his family supported. However, he had a persistently rebellious personality; for example, his parents believed that he had started smoking from the age of 10, a habit he continued into adulthood, despite their attempts to persuade him to stop.
He was prone to violent tantrums; as an adult, he acknowledged that he was quick tempered. Hunt first learned to drive on a tractor on a farm in Pembrokeshire , Wales while on a family holiday, with instruction from the farm’s owner, but he found changing gears frustrating because he lacked the required strength. Before his 18th birthday, he went to the home of Chris Ridge, his tennis doubles partner.
Ridge’s brother Simon, who raced Minis, was preparing his car for a race at Silverstone that weekend.

This is the old village, which, instead of being changed into a new one as a result of colliery development, has been left in its original state, with the addition of a few new houses. Not being situated on a road of any great importance, it may be expected to grow gradually, reflecting indirectly the prosperity of the Brodsworth Pit. A small hamlet some little distance off any main road; is quite rural, and seems never likely to change its present character. An old rural village which should be preserved surrounded by a charming piece of country never likely to be interfered with by any industrial developments.

Crossing the Irish Sea by the ‘Short Sea route’. One of the shortest crossings between Mainland Britain and Ireland is that between Portpatrick and Donaghadee. This is about 22 miles and the settlement of Scots in Ulster created traffic. The main traffic was not mail, but cattle on the hoof. John Smeaton improved the harbour at Portpatrick.
The Editors of this magazine, which does not set out to be profound, have been highly successful in capturing material both from professional locomotive engineers (who very sadly are a shrinking breed), from senior railway managers, and from people like Andrew Dow who enjoyed priviledged access to railways at an early age.
On January 1st , the former ‘Big Four’ railway companies: The rest was made up of service engines and Departmental locomotives. Following nationalisation in , six new BR Regions were formed, their new boundaries corresponding closely to the lines of the former ‘Big Four’ railway companies. As a result, many locomotives from an operational standpoint worked beyond their arbitrary Regions, so in many ways it is meaningless to classify any particular class of locomotive as belonging to any one of the six Regions during the transition from steam.
For example, it was not unusual for the Stanier ‘Black 5’ and in particular the new BR Standard classes, to be found working hundreds of miles from the Region they were initially allocated. I have recently been contacted by Colin Mason, who currently works and lives in Japan. Colin was born in the North East and spent his grammar school years living in Corbridge, Northumberland.
He has started research for a plan to build a model of Corbridge station between Newcastle and Hexham in its heyday of the s through into the 40s when it actually had a significant level of traffic serving local freight, 3 timber yards, a gasworks and so on. However he has found little information on the Internet beyond the track plan from the old OS maps copy below and a small number of photographs. This has left him with large gaps in the overall picture, such as close-up pictures of the signal box, an NER gantry type similar to those which survive at Wylam and Hexham, but which seemingly burnt down in the early 60’s.
Any advice on online locations where suitable photo archives might exist probably not ones that a search engine normally finds will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any pointers that you may be able to give Colin. John always looked forward to visiting the ‘Tappers’ where he shared fond memories of railway journeys with his old mates – stories, tales repeated many times, all true. He did not see the romance in steam; hard graft, dirty and dangerous, whereas the diesels brought comfort of a type.

Many of these locomotives were repainted in the new Railfreight Distribution two-tone grey livery, which was replaced by a revised version in Around the same time, five locomotives, , were repainted into the new Rail Express Systems livery and dedicated to postal trains.
Of the remaining locomotives, the first 15, , were operated by InterCity West Coast on express passenger services.
I remember a story about a tunnel but no idea if it was true! It was a sad and, most likely, avoidable day when the church came down. The bell was left in the rubble and was saved by the Hoylake Outdoor Pool Trust who took it into safe keeping.
It will be capable of building tramcars, suburban or inter-city trains and high-speed trains. There will be no trains during two short periods — 20 — 28 October and 16 — 24 February The massive new concourse was completed during a ten day closure of the station over the Christmas and New Year period and is as large as the Wembley football pitch. All fifteen platforms are linked together for the first time by the new concourse. The revised layout extends to just before Copenhagen Tunnel through which there are still only four tracks.
The whole area will be resignalled and it will be possible to handle the significant increase in long distance services planned for The route had been closed for several months for electrification work and a number of civil engineering improvements. Scottish Region of British Railways: In the s, the regions were abolished and replaced by “business sectors”, a process known as sectorisation. The Anglia Region was created in late , its first General Manager being John Edmonds, who began his appointment on 19 October Full separation from the Eastern Region — apart from engineering design needs — occurred on 29 April It was intended to bring the railway system into the 20th century.
A government White Paper produced in stated that modernisation would help eliminate BR’s financial deficit by , but the figures in both this and the original plan were produced for political reasons and not based on detailed analysis. Not all the modernisations would be effective at reducing costs. The dieselisation programme gave contracts primarily to British suppliers, who had limited experience of diesel locomotive manufacture, and rushed commissioning based on an expectation of rapid electrification; this resulted in numbers of locomotives with poor designs, and a lack of standardisation.
Beeching cuts During the late s, railway finances continued to worsen, whilst passenger numbers grew after restoring many services reduced during the war, and in the government stepped in, limiting the amount the BTC could spend without ministerial authority. A White Paper proposing reorganisation was published in the following year, and a new structure was brought into effect by the Transport Act
